The Iceberg

Following up on an earlier post, here is more of singer/actress Unee (유니).  I don’t know about the rest of you, but I think I can get past the nose.

It appears everyone’s favorite soldier Won Bin has decided to exit stage left after approximately a half-year of military service. According to the Chosun Ilbo, Korea’s Tom Cruise was recently approved for a medical discharge stemming from a rupture of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). (That’s a knee ligament for you less medically-saavy types.) The Won was quoted as saying,

“I experienced pain in my knee before I joined the Army, but it was ruled that it wouldn’t be an impediment to military life. It may have been aggravated by serving in mountainous area.”

(Cough, cough, bullshit, cough.) As one who has experienced a torn ACL, I can tell you that when it happens, you know it. Imagine if you will, someone setting off dynamite between your upper and lower leg. There are no “may have beens”. I’d guess that, at worst, the Won suffers from some torn cartilage.

Some Korean netizens seem to share my scepticism.

“When he shoots films he’s always running and jumping all over the place but now he can’t even take two years in the army,” one user wrote on a discussion board. “A discharge is reasonable for people who are ill or can’t adjust to military life, but why do stars who look healthy on the outside always have some problem on the inside?”

Why indeed? But honestly, we need to show a little understanding for the smiling one. Scurrying the Internet, I was able to discover that knee pain was not his only affliction. Reportedly, the Big Red Won has recently suffered from dry mouth, sore nipples, a stubbed toe, and a zit on the inside of his nose that stubbornly refuses to go away.
