Freaky Friday
Inebriated partiers crowd around the stage to get a better view of the scantily clothed woman gyrating in front of them. Said woman shakes her hips, tosses her hair and spins around to the music thumping through the speakers. Her dance oozes sexuality. Suddenly, as the song approaches its end, the woman lifts her top over her head - exposing her cosmetic surgeon’s handiwork. (Job well done, Dr. Kim). As the audience expresses its approval, the woman – shirt in hand – glides off the stage. Another female contestant walks out; this time with partner in tow. The music starts up again and, unlike the previous dancer, the young couple waste little time disrobing. The man takes off his shirt and lies on the floor and the woman sits on top of him. They squirm around for a few seconds before the woman removes her shirt and bra. After another minute or so of simulated sex the woman stands up. She takes off her shorts and panties and again sits atop the man on the floor – this time in the position of, um, let’s just say it’s a certain number. You know it, the number that every overweight beer-guzzling first baseman in slow-pitch softball leagues wears. The woman removes her partner’s jeans and they proceed with their show. The crowd goes wild.
Sound like another wild night in Hongdae? Think again. This scene occurred in a Korean-style “booking” nightclub in the quiet little town of Yeosu last Friday night. And outside of myself and a co-worker, there was not a single Westerner to be found in the club.
Hongdae, you ain’t got nothin’ on Yeosu.
Here’s a peek at the evening. The video was taken stealthily so…don’t expect too much.
Here is some more footage of some (clothed) sexy dancing Friday night. This video is much clearer.
UPDATE: I should note that there was no orifice to orifice contact during the show. Also, I won’t mention the name of the club, because god knows I don’t want to take even the slightest risk of it being shut down. Viva la Booking Club!

hmmm……Friday night ride to Yeosu….. that sounds like a good idea……

Neither one of those videos will play from this end. I just get the “connecting…” message.

Jeff, from what I hear, it’s a regular Friday night occurence. For accuracy’s sake, I’ll take the trouble to check it out again this weekend.
Nomad, hmm…that’s strange. They worked from my home and office. I’ll look into it when I get home this evening.
If anyone else has trouble with the vids, I’d appreciate it if you’d let me know.

They both worked fine for me.
September 18th, 2006 at 4:32 pm
worked for me and i have a three-year-old apple powerbook.
when we say that they “work” for us, we’re talking about if they play on our computers or not, right?
September 18th, 2006 at 4:59 pm
Mmmm…comfort women.
September 20th, 2006 at 8:58 am
Now both “play” (from my computer at work), but I get neither video or sound. LOL. Do you know what codecs you used for these?
September 20th, 2006 at 9:23 am
The video is MPEG-1 format.
I’ve found that when I open videos using Firefox that the screen is black, but if I resize it to full screen it works. Never any problem with the audio though, so that may not be what you’re experiencing. Never any problems with IE though.

Uri,
Thanks for visiting my blog. I hope you’ll frequent this site often.
I think what you want to say is that most people around here (I assume you mean Korea) will conclude that she is a prostitute; as are the others who disrobed. Personally, I choose not to pass judgement on those on stage as well as those in the audience. I could really care less. The point/observation I was making in the post is that Hongdae is not the only locale where crowds of people enjoy watching and taking part in racy behavior. It appears to be universal, wouldn’t you say?
As far as Korean being your mother tongue, what is your point?
September 23rd, 2006 at 12:48 pm
Iceberg, that’s quite something - certainly worked for me.

Iceberg
Thanks for your comment.
I think there would have been a little misconception to communicate each other. What I really wanted to say about “mother tung” is as,
I believe I can see the truth more than you are.
As you wrote “Personally, I choose not to pass judgement on those on stage as well as those in the audience.” I agree what you do… Probabaly you wrote at your personal side.
Blog must be a personal place but a little bit side effect of self-jounalism.
Many people will visit your blog and copy - paste your contents to their own or any others.
My worries is, mis-understanding and what this cause misconception as well as prejudice about Korean to the people who has low-level knowlege of Korea..
I wish many people will get good advise from your blog with fact and reliable information. My worries is misconception. I do hope to say this.

Uri,
I appreciate your concern for the image of Korea and Koreans. I can assure you that my Korean is good enough and I’m open-minded enough to recognize what’s happening around me. There was no misconception as to the events that occured at the nightclub that evening.
If it gives you comfort, I think you can feel confident that readers of this post will come away with no greater misconception of Korea than Koreans have of foreigners as they are portrayed in the Korean media.

Pretty good Uri. But not as good as your baduk work.

Iceberg said said “If it gives you comfort, I think you can feel confident that readers of this post will come away with no greater misconception of Korea than Koreans have of foreigners as they are portrayed in the Korean media.”
That’s an interesting concept Iceberg. The main difference in point is that us foreigners are rude enough to not give a shit about what anyone else thinks of us, whereas the Koreans have enough pride to care what others think of them.
How many times have I wanted to slap a fellow foreigner for complaining about how Koreans don’t speak English in Korea! Yet the same foreigner will also complain when he comes across someone not speaking English in the foreigner’s home country. Blind arrogance.

“…us foreigners are rude enough to not give a shit…”
Pretty broad brush.
“…Koreans have enough pride to care what others think of them…”
Not sure how that’s related to pride, but okay.
Nothing wrong with concern for how one is perceived. The problem is when one tries to go to great lengths to cover up what is out there…while at the same time passing judgment on others who simply acknowledge that it’s out there. To be fair to Uri (to whom my comment that you quoted was addressed), I’m not implying that he/she was passing judgment on anyone. But he/she was making an (all-too-common, unfortunately) attempt to persuade people not familiar with Korea that this sort of thing is an anomaly - when in fact it isn’t.
“How many times I have wanted to slap a fellow foreigner…”
Care to elaborate how that is related to this post or the comments that follow?
